Applying lessons learned on the court (and behind the scenes) to life, career, and business

Athletics is a business, and it’s a training ground for life. During my athletics career, I learned about teamwork, interacting with all kinds of people, the process of change, handling setbacks, building a team, and more. Whether you’re an athlete, parent, or business professional, you’ll find ways to apply these lessons to your life.

How women athletes have changed the game for us all

Women had a profound impact on my love of sports from an early age. My mom and I watched basketball games together all the time. She was really the first person to spark a passion for sports in me. We were huge Boston Celtics fans. Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Robert Parrish – we were right…

We’re twenty years and counting in our mission to help Atlanta students and families

We’ve been celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Future Foundation this year.  What started as an idea among my wife, Delicia, my sister, Qaddirah, and myself to help kids from our old elementary school get more academic assistance has turned into a strong, mission-driven Foundation that provides a wide range of services to Atlanta youth…

Why I love to read — and how it expands my life

I didn’t used to be a big reader, but the older I’ve gotten the more reading has become a staple in my life. I love diving into books to learn about new things and to get some background and insight on interesting people, events from history, or just new ideas that I’d like to learn…

Three things I learned from my parents about being an “everyday philanthropist”

The older I get, the more I like to reflect back on the memories I’ve had and the lessons I’ve learned from growing up.  One of the biggest was the example that my parents set for me about community service. It’s what has driven my own passion for philanthropy in my life today. My parents…

Reflecting on the Olympics, then and now

The Olympics have always been one of my favorite events.  I was a runner growing up, so I have always enjoyed watching track and field, specifically distance running. And this year, I enjoyed following women’s volleyball with my daughter, who is a rising high school player. She plays left side, so we were amazed by…

Celebrating the connection points that bond us all together

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Like any other month that is dedicated to a particular group or interest, I like to take time to not just reflect on that particular group or interest throughout the month, but also learn new things about them/it. During the month of May, I’ve read about…

The Story You Tell Without Speaking – Why Personal Branding Matters

When I first heard the term “personal brand,” I’ll be honest, I resisted it. I didn’t want to overindulge in media or feel like I was putting on a show. But over time, I realized something important: whether we’re intentional about it or not, each of ...
